How to Redact a PDF Safely (Black Boxes Are Not Enough)
Many leaks happen because someone covered a name with a black box and thought it was gone. In most PDF editors the text is still underneath. Anyone can select it, copy it and paste it.
What real redaction does
Real redaction removes the content itself. In Redact PDF, pages with redactions are flattened into pictures with the black boxes burned in. The hidden words no longer exist in the file.
Redact in four steps
- Open the tool and choose your PDF.
- Draw boxes over private details, or type a word to mark every match automatically.
- Review each page. Make sure no copy of the information appears elsewhere.
- Press Apply redactions and save.
Do not forget the hidden parts
- The title and author are stored in the file. Clear them with Edit PDF Metadata.
- File names can reveal names too.
- Test the result: try to select and copy text under a black box. Nothing should come out.
If you also want to limit who can open the file, add a password with Protect PDF after redacting.
